Material Things: It’s (Almost) Time for Twill

Since we’re all ready to start thinking about spring and, quite frankly, ready to lighten up what’s hanging in the coat closet – this is the perfect time to talk about twill!

What is twill? It’s a textile that is woven diagonally. Twill refers to the construction of the coat, not the actual fabric type.

Are there different types? Tweed, houndstooth, and herringbone are variations of twill that are simply woven with more than one color thread. Denim and chino are examples of monochromatic twills.

Does it resist stains? Yes! Dirt and spills have a hard time adhering to multiple or uneven threads, so stains either can’t cling or won’t show up as much.

Is twill comfortable? The basic weave of twill allows threads to move freely, making it soft and flexible. As a result, it drapes well and is easy to keep wrinkle-free.

Does it keep you warm? The higher the thread count the more insulation the twill weave provides and the more durable the coat is. However, twill tends to be a lighter fabric not intended for extremely cold days. But it’s perfect for transitional seasons like spring!
